My Practice Philosophy
Chiropractic’s Founding Father, D.D. Palmer, stated there were three causes of spinal subluxation, illness, and health loss: 1) Trauma, 2) Toxins, 3) Thoughts. My goal as a Chiropractor is to address all three to the best of my ability to assist my patients in realizing their full health potential.
Trauma – Physical injury, subluxations (misalignments of the vertebrae of the spine) –
Addressing the issues of trauma involve focusing on the key weak spot of the body, which is expression of nerve function in the body. If this key system is non functioning, nothing else matters (ie, when your brain is dead, you are dead). To this end, I sought out the most effective physical adjusting method, despite the fact that it was the hardest to learn and harder still to master namely the Gonstead Methodology, or Gonstead Technique, as some call it.
I was attending a conference in CA in October 2010, where I was having lunch with a group that consisted of a variety of different practitioners; PhD Psychologists, Body Workers, Doctors of Chiropractic, etc. and we were discussing what type of methods we each used in our practices. When I said I was a Gonstead Practitioner, I drew blank faces from the others, however a Chiropractor who was present (who practiced very different oriental medicine methods in her practice), said “they are simply the best osseous adjusters there are” (an “osseous adjustor” is one who actively physically adjusts patients, so a “hands on” chiropractor).
Many Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) today do not give actual manual adjustments any more. I am not one of those DCs. I believe that to call yourself a chiropractor and not actually adjust your patients when they need it is doing them a disservice.
Dr. GS Gonstead was a Master Adjustor and earned the reputation of the “Chiropractor’s Chiropractor. He passed on to Dr. J Larry Troxell authorization to teach his advanced methods. I had the privilege to study and intern with Dr. Troxell for 3 years as a chiropractic student, including 1 year as the Head Intern of his clinic in Iowa. Since then, I have spent the last 20 years staying true to Dr. Gonstead’s legacy, serving my patients and striving to continuously improve as a Gonstead Chiropractor.
Toxins – Dysfunctional or Imbalanced Body Chemistry, nutritional deficiencies, allergies, sensitivities, low detoxification capacity –
The best Chiropractors looked at the whole person, including nutritional and body chemistry status, as keys to assisting patient recovery. To this end, I have attended many advanced seminars in whole food focused nutrition and dietary change for 23 years now, beginning while I was still a student at Palmer College of Chiropractic. When the State of Wisconsin began offering Advanced Nutritional Certification for Chiropractors, I immediately applied and became a WI state Certified Nutritional Counselor as well as a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic.
I work primarily with whole food nutritional supplements through Standard Process, a Wisconsin company founded in 1929 that continues to build on the extraordinary work of their founder, Dr. Royal Lee, DDS, who was a pioneer in nutrition research as well as a prolific inventor and engineer with over 70 patents. I follow the practice philosophy that it is best to work with the natural systems inherent in nature and the body to restore balance to the body. It’s best to give the body time to return to natural homeostasis by assisting it rather than forcing change via drug therapy, provided one has the time and patience to do so naturally. Too often people want to rush to a quick fix solution that may alleviate symptoms, but often ends up sweeping the problem “under the rug” and creating additional problems elsewhere in the body. These new problems then “require” additional drugs. This cycle is why so many patients will come into my office taking 6, 8, 10, 12 different prescription drugs, many of which are trying to address symptoms that are being caused by the very drugs they are taking! Rarely will medicine offer any hope of ever getting off any of them. The drugs become a permanent “solution” to what may have, at one time, been a temporary problem (and it may still be if we can get to the root of the problem and work through it).
Thoughts – Stress, somatic memory, psycho neuro immunology, neuro emotional complexes, conditional reflexes, mind body connection –
We all know that stress affects our health, but what can we do about it? “Think happy thoughts”? There are now proven, tested physical methods of relieving physiologically rooted stress. It is not mind or body, it is both.
Over 25 years ago, Dr. S. Walker discovered how to address the physiological basis of pathological emotions and stress. Dr. Walker defines the four factors influencing health and wellbeing as Structural (spinal adjustment), Emotional, Toxins, and Biochemistry (nutrition). This is very much in line with Dr. DD Palmer’s core focus of Chiropractic, as discussed earlier. Dr. Walker called his process Neuro Emotional Technique (NET).
I have found NET to be so effective, when a patient tests for it and it is performed properly, that patients often express amazement over the results; they are so transformative. We have literally achieved changes in decades old health problems, stress patterns, and phobias that were not helped by any other methods. When called for, I know of no more powerful healing tool than NET. In 2013, I became the first certified NET practitioner in the state of Wisconsin and 2016, I became one of the first Level III NET practitioners in the world!
